How to create a Favicon for my website
Welcome to Tip of the Week (TOW)!
I’m starting a new section to share a weekly tip and for this week I’ve decided to show you how to create a Favicon for your website or blog.
But before we go on… what’s a Favicon?
A Favicon is an small image (icon) that is related to your website and is typically displayed in the address bar of the browser accessing the site or next to the site name in a user’s list of bookmarks. Having a Favicon will help you strengthen your brand and help your visitors quickly identify your website in the address bar when they have multiple windows opened or inside their bookmarks’ lists. For a Favicon to appear when an user accesses your website, you will have to place a file called favicon.ico in the root directory of your webserver. If you use a Content Management System (CMS), there might be an option for you to upload it but you can also do it by accessing your website using an FTP.
So, how do I create a Favicon?
- Create a 16×16 pixels image with the design that you’d like your Favicon to have. You can save this image as a .png or .gif file.
- Then go to any of this websites:
- Upload your file to the site. Follow their instructions and you’ll get a .ico file.
- Upload the .ico to your webserver and check that it is working!
Hope you have found this useful and please let me know in the comments below if you have any suggestions for future tips.
